Memphis soul, New Orleans funk, classic rock and cosmic vibes come together in the music of the Dopacetics, a circle of Indianapolis music veterans featuring Dave Harrison on lead vocals, Poncho Hedrick on bass, Lamar Owens on drums, Mina Keohane on keyboards and Scott Hall on guitar.
Hedrick, Hall and Keohane first found their common groove as members of the hip-hop collective Freehand Orchestra, supporting vocalist T.J. Reynolds. Hedrick leads the progressive funk project Blackberry Jam, with Owens as a longtime collaborator. Vocalist/percussionist Harrison has performed experimental music with Glitch Clique and classic rock with Rat Shovel. Keohane is a sought-after side player in rock and jazz circles while fronting her own combo, Mina & the Wondrous Flying Machine.
The Dopacetics’ collective output has a contemporary edge while drawing on a range of classic influences, from Otis Redding and Curtis Mayfield to Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. Contact us at [email protected], and hear more music at soundcloud.com/the-dopacetics.
Blackberry Jam is an urban alternative band formed in the late fall of 96. The band has emerged as one of the more eclectic units around by playing and often times merging raw heavy rock and chill-out soul together. Originating in Indianapolis, Indiana…the band’s nucleus consist of founding member/ bassist Ron “Poncho” Hedrick, lead singer Jumbo Shrimp, Brian Weir Harden on guitar, Jerry Gates on drums, and Sean “Solar Power” Hedrick as MC extraordinaire/back-up vox/ rhythmatic elements, and recently added Joe Burton on percussionand sound enhancement. BBJ is committed to presenting a whole new sound based on the diverse attitude the band brings to their music and live shows. The group whose line-up consist of talented multi-genre music lovers… proves the unique sound as well as style of Blackberry Jam is intentional.
BBJ has compiled a pretty strong resume along the way by being the only band from Indianapolis, IN to open for top funk and soul acts such as: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Van Hunt, Here Come The Mummies, and Ebony Rhythm Funk Campaign(throw-back legendary funk and soul band from Indianapolis, IN). Noted music festivals Blackberry Jam has played at are: The King of The Skate Park (an all day BMX and Skateboard/music festival held at the Major Taylor Velodrome complex in Indianapolis,IN) which was organized by BBJ band member Sean “Solar Power” Hedrick, The Midwest Music Summit, and back in Oct 2008 in the beautiful landscape of Deerfields Mills River, NC the band performed at the Loki Festival which included: The Roots, JJ Grey And Mofro, Toots & The Maytals, Cake, George Clinton, and countless other notable acts. BBJ’s many urban channels put them in a class of very few. They have played many venues ranging from live music bars to cozy clubs all the way up to large college universities.
Not a lot of bands are able to touch as many different people and diverse crowds the way BBJ can. The members of the band are good spiritual minded people who believe in pure music. Through dedication and love for the urban music scene local to world-wide…Blackberry Jam’s only alternative is to stay committed to providing its power and finesse to an already great culture.
