800 lb. Gorilla is a college rock/jam band based in Bloomington, Indiana. With a rock and roll core, the band pulls together funk and jazz influences to create driving, catchy, danceable grooves. A five-piece band, 800lbG places rock-solid guitar, funky keyboards and sax on top of a drums-and-bass rhythm section. The interplay between musicians takes place on an improvisational plane that harkens Herbie Hancock, The Grateful Dead and Steely Dan.

Originally formed by brothers Mark (guitar) and Daniel (lead vox) Humphrey when they were in middle school, the band has evolved from a hard-rock power trio to a funk and jazz juggernaut. Since that time they have added Kwame Newton (keyboards/alto sax), Brian Carson (drums), and Joe Schweitzer (electric bass). As a group, you would be hard-pressed to find five more competent musicians.

800 lb. Gorilla has enjoyed a warm welcome from music lovers as they have developed their show on stages across Indiana and Ohio. Their fanbase is strongest among their college peers in Bloomington, and the jam band community throughout Central Indiana. They are fortunate to have been invited to play festivals this year including Hyperion, Good People Good Times, JorgStock (Eiteljorg Museum), and Taste of Bloomington.
The band intends to take the musical interplay higher, and continue to reach music lovers far and wide.

Rock ‘n’ roll epitomizes escapism in its purest form.

It’s not just artistic anesthetization either, but rather a galvanizing force that inspires us to keep pushing through life’s trials and tribulations. That’s why we still listen to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Rush, and countless others all these years later. It’s the same reason audiences will be talking about Backup Planet’s second full-length album, Reactions, for a long time to come. The Nashville, TN quartet—Ben Cooper [keys, vocals], Chris Potocik [drums, vocals], Gavin Donati [guitar, vocals], and Blake Gallant [bass, vocals]—write arena-size anthems echoing with progressive intricacy, funk swagger, and even a little metallic edge. Giving listeners an inspiring and invigorating aural haven, their moniker couldn’t be more apropos…

“I worked at a liquor store all through college,” remembers Ben. “I was sitting there one night in a funk because of school work and a fight with my girl at the time. Every channel on TV decried, ‘The end of the world is nigh!’ I thought, ‘Man, I wish I had a Backup Planet where I could go and escape.’ It dawned on me. That’s what naturally happens when you play music; you’re transported somewhere else. It’s a shared experience where everybody goes together.”

The name perfectly fit the tunes Ben and his college buddy Gavin wrote starting in 2013. Rounded out by Chris and Blake, Backup Planet became a local favorite around the University of Tennessee Knoxville. They independently released their full-length debut, Element, during 2015 and began sharing the stage with the likes of The Revivalists, Papadosio, and more in addition to headlining countless packed shows. Relix proclaimed them “On The Verge,” and one fateful gig led to signing with powerhouse management firm Red Light Management [Dave Matthews Band, My Morning Jacket, Dopapod, Phish,].

However, tragedy struck Backup Planet only weeks after this big milestone.

“I had a weird sense of premonition,” admits Ben. “We had just left a show, and within 30 seconds, our van was flipped over on the interstate sliding. There were sparks, glass, and metal flying everywhere and people screaming. Fortunately, we were all alive, but we lost our van, gear, and trailer. It flipped our whole lives figuratively and literally on their sides.”

Rather than engage audiences via crowd-funding, the band quietly saved throughout the rest of the year by performing local headline gigs to re-build their infrastructure. Bruised but not broken, they entered Syncromesh Studios in Birmingham, AL with producer Jason Elgin [Collective Soul, Maylene & The Sons of Disaster,] to record Reactions during 2016. In just three weeks, they tracked everything analog the old-fashioned way.
“We love production in all of its forms, and working with Jason was an awesome learning experience,” the singer goes on. “He knew every in-and-out and possible thing you could do in the studio, and it became like a creative sanctuary.”

Now, “Earth As A Dream” rises like a phoenix from a torrent of shimmering keys, bombastic percussion, and incendiary guitars before exploding on an expansive refrain.

“Lyrically and thematically, there were a lot of things going on for us and in the world at large,” Ben comments. “There’s this pervasive mindset, particularly in Western society, that the world is going to hell in a handbasket. However, the earth could be hit by a comet or some crazy catastrophe completely out of our control might happen. It’s supposed to make everyone think. It’s a visual journey where you might be looking at the earth from the stars or on some distant planet millions of years later, reminiscing. It’s a testament to how cool it is that we get to live here and have this place while we do.”

Then, there’s the haunting and heartfelt “Sublimation,” which conjures up a simmering stew of impressive fretwork, percussion, and towering vocals. “Two days after the wreck, one of our close friends passed away,” he continues. “It was a crazy tragic house fire. It really hit home, because I just lost everything. My girlfriend was cheating. My buddy died. I was sitting in my room in a state of reflection. I felt like I was having a conversation with him, and the chorus, ‘Take my hand child, let me show you how to breathe’ was his advice to get out of this slump.”

The title REACTIONS evokes the devotion of these four musicians, facing a near death experience and bouncing back with a deeper appreciation for their craft and a definitive body of work.

“It plays into the laws of physics and thermodynamics,” he says. “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. You never know what’s going to happen. Everything can change in an instant. It’s about how you react. There are those thematic elements in the music and songwriting. That’s been the story of the last year and ties into what we created.”

As these four talents continue “reacting” at the highest level, listeners everywhere fall into an escape fueled by mind-blowing musicianship, poetic songwriting, and hooks that resound past the heavens.

“This is what we live by musically,” Ben leaves off. “We say this all the time, ‘You can play to three people or three-thousand people, but if you’re not enjoying it and connecting with your band mates, what’s the point?’ Our approach is to take something negative and turn it into a positive by using the language of music. It comes down to overcoming adversity. This makes us complete, and we hope you feel that.”

This is Bad Dagger.

The world's original innovators of and only true source for pure, high-grade Electrosexymetal.™
Established in earnest: 2012

Disco, Metal, House. The 3 words most commonly used to describe the aggressive and highly-energized audio/visual experience that is Bad Dagger. Since first coming on to the scene as a group in early 2012, these 2 dynamic and talented artists have impressed and entertained audiences with their creative and unique presentation of audio production and musical performance. Bad Dagger has appropriately been called less of a band, and more closely resembling “one instrument that takes multiple people to play.”

Based in Indianapolis, IN, Bad Dagger is currently comprised of 2 members. Cameron Reel provides live audio production (synths, basses, pads, leads via Ableton/ MacBook Pro) as well playing bass guitar. On drum set and sample pad, Eddie Roodvoets provides an intense and nonstop energy to the music. Extremely danceable and cinematic, this act has a tendency to switch gears without warning, making it possible to touch on a wide array of genres in each set. They make use of this versatility with relentless passion and vigor.

Their blend of musical genres is indeed unique. Nothing sounds like Bad Dagger. Monumental and sublime at times, then hard, dark and anchored at others. A typical Bad Dagger set is certainly wide in scope, touching on elements of Electro, House, Metal, Prog, Funk, Disco, and Big Beat. These elements and more combine in such a way that Bad Dagger leaves each audience member with a sense of having an experience rather than just having seen a concert.

CALABASH began as a collaboration between two aspiring singer/songwriters in the heart of America's music city, Nashville, Tennessee. Having formed the group with a shared determination for performing original music, the duo of Paul Wiemeier and Jarod Heim returned back to their home of Evansville, Indiana. As their music grew, so did the lineup. What was once a simple acoustic duo had become an onslaught of rhythm and melody. After years of gigging regionally and building up a fan base, CALABASH has risen to new heights:

Mainstay at The Hideaway in Louisville
Headline The Mousetrap in Indianapolis
Rock the stage at the infamous Preservation Pub in Knoxville
Play Hyperion Festival, with thousands in attendance
Opened for Grammy nominee artist, Afro Man

Trying to throw CALABASH into a distinct genre or classify them is impossible. Their sound encompasses two lead singers, each with commanding vocals, yet, with pronounced differences in style and lyric. The rhythm and bass will keep you entranced, while the lead guitar will leave you begging for more. Their vast assemblage of percussion instruments is unrivaled and seldom seen with other performing acts in the region. All of these devices course together in what can only be personally described by each listener’s experience. With heartfelt lyrics about everyday life and the triumphs and tragedies within, fans are able to draw a connection between their own experiences and the soundtrack of CALABASH. A flowing mix of rock, blues, reggae, and folk is carefully woven into each original composition. Their musical library is fillled with creative, pulse pounding, body moving songs and each set list is tailored to the venue and crowd to which they are performing, so you will never hear the same set list twice.

"Booking music for a living, and as the owner of Lamasco Bar and Grill, I spend hours on a daily basis scouring the regional area for new music. One of my personal favorites doesn't require me to look much further than my own back yard. Calabash is essentially Lamasco's house band, and one of my most dear group of musicians. Their sound blends elements of so many genres, their songwriting is superb, and the sound is pure genius; simply put, they are a personal favorite and a must see for any music lover" - Amy Rivers-Word, owner of Lamasco Bar and Grill

"Many bands haven’t swum far in the rivers, lakes and oceans of Rock the way Calabash has. It makes them sleek and strong with a self-assured intensity that’s one part show band, another part self-examining team of philosophers" - www.songmango.com

"While they don't care to put a label on the band's sound, you can safely call it eclectic, the result of a wide range of musical influences...Simply put, it's a sound that has a little something for everybody" - Thomas Ellis, NEWS4U magazine

"Calabash has become the go-to entertainment in the tri-state. Entertaining the fans and those who are new to the band, Calabash continues to share its determination for great live original music. As a supporter of local music at WUEV 91.5 FM, I believe that Calabash has great things in front of it and will always supply the good times whenever and wherever they perform." - Paul Mattingly, WUEV 91.5 FM (wuev.org)

"Calabash is a mainstay at 'Evening on the River', held each year in June along the Evansville riverfront. The band's distinct flavor of live music is enjoyable to music lovers of all ages, so it is a perfect fit for this unique event. 'Evening on the River' raises funds to support the many parks in Evansville. Without the support of the talented performers in our area, this important event wouldn't be possible. We look forward to many more years of Calabash entertaining the crowds at 'Evening on the River'." - Laurel Meny, Evansville Parks Foundation Board Member
