About

Native Sun

They call our city Nap because it’s the most slept-on city in America.

This is Native Sun’s answer to the question of how Indianapolis came to be nicknamed Nap Town. All too often, Indy locals lose faith in the spirit of their city and insist it’s named so because it’s a sleepy metropolis in the Midwest with nothing to do or see. This cultural crippling has subdued the drive to create in much of the city’s talent by bogging down artists with despair and leaving them with little hope for a chance to gain national recognition.

But the native sons of Native Sun have a different outlook on their city of Nap. It is their belief that Indianapolis harbors a wealth of talent, particularly in the vein of hip hop. Leading by example, the band envisions that traditional hip hop elements (compelling lyricism, dusty samples, dope beats) paired with the versatility of live instrumentation has the potential to create music that sounds like nothing before it.

Leveraging more than 20 years of combined experience as professional musicians and performers, B Meeks (bass), Sleepy (drums) and B Young (emcee) began to intertwine their musical backgrounds within the context of hip hop when Native Sun formed in 2008. The resourceful musicians draw from their familiarity in gospel, rock, electronic, jazz and soul, creating music that sounds much bigger than what one would expect from a 3 piece act. It is this solid foundation in live music (as compared to produced beats) that sets Native Sun apart from other hip hop groups.

Through their vision to be an example of success to artists in Indianapolis and similar places, Native Sun has earned a reputation as a first call backing band in the Indianapolis hip hop scene. They’ve had the honor of performing with Elzhi of Slum Village and DJ Logic, as well as opening for Foreign Exchange, Musiq Soulchild, Mayer Hawthorne, Black Milk and Muhsinah. After putting in more than 30 hours of grinding in the studio, Native Sun released its full-length debut album, Step Into The Light in August of 2012. Continuing to further push their creative limits, the band looks forward to releasing, The Undeniable EP and subsequent tour to follow in the Spring and Summer of 2014.

About

What the Bleep

A respected purveyor of ragga sounds, What the Bleep’s pseudonym depicts the character behind the music as unconventional and undefinable. He defies stereotypes and assumed cultural contexts, maintains no blind allegiances to genres or scene players, and is known to follow his own path.

For many years, What the Bleep was the unfaltering and widely-heralded ambassador of ragga jungle. Self-taught and coming from the unlikely place of Bowling Green, Ohio, his early story was one of a dormant passion for rhythm unleashed through turntables. Identified by his flailing locks and the fierce energy of a frenzied technician, he quickly became a staple in the Midwest. And marching forward he came to touch corners of the country and reach a global audience through years of broadcasting on jungletrain.net. Meanwhile, he had harnessed his influence in the scene and quickly-learned knowledge of event production to bring electronic music culture to his hometown in the form of Konkrete Jungle Bowling Green.

Fast forward to today – his 10-year-long dreadlocks are retired, he has left behind the limitations of a single genre and the vinyl medium, and he now sees music culture with a new clarity and greater depth. Never having slowed down as a DJ, his partnership with long-time co-selector foi oi oi is booming with a multi-genre “forward-thinking junglist” style found in energetic live sets and their annual mix series, Feelings for Detroit. And as a solo DJ, What the Bleep is reinvented as a roots-oriented versatile selector – dubby, heady, moody, and bassy. Beyond the stage, he continues to use his experience to push forward with a hand in event production, booking, promotions, and otherwise maximizing the potential of the culture.

IndyMojo Presents: Altered Thurzdaze – The 500 Tour w/ CASPA – Thursday, December 11th

IndyMojo Presents: Altered Thurzdaze - The 500 Tour w/ CASPA

Having released and performed in almost every corner of the globe, Caspa is identified as an innovator in all areas of bass music, from producing and DJing to sourcing new talent for his own Dub Police and Sub Soldiers imprint.

We all know music should be about vibes and feelings, not glitz and glamour – which can be easily forgotten and usually is. Its now time to strip away the hype and facade and to remind us what its really about.

Picture a dark, underground space, an intimate gathering in the company of the most dedicated bass-heads. The fans who truly love and crave the simplicity of an original underground, London rave – dimly lit by a single red light and free from any over-the-top gimmicks. All that matters is a huge sound system, Caspa and 500 like-minded people engulfed by the sound and the vibe.

This is something that can only be generated by a true innovator. This is ‘The 500 Tour’.

Caspa: You know the name… Now know the facts.

A global force in dubstep, his commitment and creativity is coded deep into the scene’s earliest framework: the Dopest Ghost In Town was hard at work long before the seismic cultural explosion in the late 2000s. Long before dubstep even had a name.

We need to rewind to 2003.

Back then west Londoner Gary McCann was representing England as a basketball player. When his sports career was stopped abruptly by an injury he shifted his focus fully to beats and applied the same pro attitude. Under the name Quiet Storm he fully immersed himself in the most exciting, creatively daring and technical benchmark setting underground musical movement since jungle… Which was the genre that turned him on to electronic music in the first place.

Endless ground-breaking, scene-shaping manoeuvres have followed in every aspect of his career: As a DJ he was a key figure on pioneering pirate station Rinse FM during the early 2000s, he’s been the support act of choice for the mighty Prodigy in 2012 and 2013 and was booked by Pete Tong as the first dubstep DJ to play in Ibiza in 2009.

As a producer not only has he remixed the biggest names in the widest realms of electronic music (Depeche Mode, Deadmau5, Buraka Som Sistema, Swedish House Mafia and many more) but he was also the first dubstep producer to officially remix a US rap artist (Ludacris – ‘How Low Can You Go’). Meanwhile as a label owner he’s been responsible for signing the debut productions by fellow bass titans Rusko, Emalkay and N-Type.

These are just a handful of highlights. Other massive achievements fire from all directions: Alongside Rusko he delivered the world-renowned ‘Fabriclive 37’ album – the first ever commercially released dubstep mix, it’s regarded as the genre’s authoritative blueprint and influenced an entire generation of young artists. His three imprints – Storming Productions, Sub Soldiers and Dub Police – have amassed a repertoire of over 500 tracks and 11 albums from some of the most exciting names in the game. Celebrating their 10th anniversary in 2014, Caspa has developed Dub Police to become one the most consistent brands in the genre. Be it through its global events or its constant mission to represent and nurture the finest international talent, the label has scored so much respect that to many fans Dub Police is dubstep.

As a producer Caspa’s clout is equally boundary breaking… His genre-smelting remix of TC’s ‘Where My Money’ was the first moment dubstep infected other genres and forged the concrete link between dubstep and drum & bass. His incendiary hype-raiser ‘War’ with The Prodigy’s Keith Flint took dubstep to stadium-shattering new levels while his BBC Radio 1-supported Mr Hudson hook-up ‘Back For The First Time / Love Never Dies’ was a key moment in the relationship between dubstep and daytime radio playlists.

Over the course of two albums (2009’s ‘Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening’ and 2013’s ‘Alpha Omega’) and countless singles, his distinctive, uncompromising heavyweight approach refuses to follow trends or kowtow to commercial expectations. His heart forever beating to an underground drum, Caspa is one of the few original dubstep producers who refuses to flip flavours for fickle trends. Whether you’re vibing to his earliest genre-defining cuts such as ‘Rubber Chicken’ and ‘Cockney Violin’ or you’re bouncing off the walls to the brutal beauty of ‘Champion Skank’ you’ll know this: Caspa is passionately dubstep, through and through… As you’ll see when he drops his brand new material in late 2014!

This unique attitude is also represented through his dedicated work as a DJ. A consummate selector behind critically acclaimed mixes such as the agenda-setting ‘Fabriclive 37’, the launch of Dub Police’s own ‘My Style’ collection and his own ‘Dubstep Sessions’ series – he’s notorious for packing dubs so exclusive most DJs would happily sell their teeth for them.

All arenas, all territories…. His fast-paced style has enthralled crowds from Kazakhstan to Kuala Lumpur via every possible well-known festival in the world including Sonar where he played to over 60,000 ravers between Dizzee Rascal and The Chemical Brothers. And Cape Town Electronic Music Festival where he extended his trip to spend time in the townships, passionately sharing some of his musical techniques.

Yet no matter how many large the crowds are, or how high profile the international shows are, Caspa has never lost the connection with his underground club roots. In the past he’s taken his own 70,000 watt PK soundsystem to venues so he could guarantee the perfect sonic dynamics his music should be experienced at… And his unique 500 tour concept – forthcoming in autumn 2014 – is equally devoted to the true roots of dubstep culture.

The ground-breaking, scene-shaping manoeuvres continue… Deep into his second decade and Caspa continues to remain a global force in dubstep. More committed and more creative than ever before, he is constantly looking to take his sound, his label, his artists and his skills to untold new levels.

So now you know the facts. Stay locked… This is just the beginning

With special guest….

* THE OTHERS
London, UK

https://www.facebook.com/OthersDubstep

Among the ever-expanding landscape of Dubstep, Alex Crawford (known musically as The Others) has crafted his own distinct style and shaped up what promises to be a successful 2014. Having released his debut artist album and conquered music venues worldwide, the future will see him focus on producing his niche blend of classic Dubstep creation.

During 2013 The Others had a range of successes, reaching from one of the biggest Dubstep singles of the year to delving into a deeper, darker style of production, gaining support from original scene tastemakers such as Caspa, Youngsta and Skream, giving a huge nod to the roots of Dubstep. Having released his debut artist album at the very end of 2012 with features from Emalkay, Joker, Stamina MC, Breakage, Lonette Charles and Geoff Smith, the following year was dedicated to the promotion of Red Planet’s impressive singles. Standout single ‘Fallout’ with Emalkay gained recognition from all corners of electronic music, with continued support from Radio stations such as Radio 1, Kiss FM, XFM, a nomination for a Bass Music Award and a feature from key Dubstep YouTube channel UKF. His inclusion in all sections of Dub Police’s Past Present Future compilation cemented his reputation as a bass music artist with longevity.

Dubstep fans will of course recognise The Others’ early production from Caspa and Rusko’s seminal FabricLive 37 mix. The special VIP mix of Africa became both a Dubstep anthem and a calling card for Alex’s skilful production. The Others (as a production duo) were soon snapped up by Caspa for his record label Dub Police, where Alex Crawford remains as an artist today (retaining the moniker The Others), racking up an incredible 23 releases – making him the most released and longest-standing artist on the entire label. Releases such as the Gravity EP and First Flight EP on Dub Police ensured he had earned his place among Dubstep’s elite. The Others has also found success with other respectable bass music labels including Sub Soldiers, Tempa, Ringo, Boka and Wheel & Deal records.

As well as a fantastic track record in producing, The Others is a more than accomplished DJ, being invited to play at some of the most prestigious venues worldwide. He has been a constant fixture at the Dub Police fabric residency in his hometown of London, and played key venues in the city like Pacha, Plastic People (FWD), Ministry of Sound and Matter. The Others has been invited to DJ at parties across the globe, including an impressive six US tours, both solo and group expeditions with label mates from Dub Police. He has performed at prestigious parties and venues such as Smog at The House of Blues in LA, South by Southwest in Texas, World Music Conference Miami and Beta in Denver for Sub.mission. Australasia was also graced with his musical skill during a Ministry of Sound tour of Australia and New Zealand in 2011, and Europe has been a staple destination with performances at Tomorrowland Festival, Outlook Festival, Paradiso in Amsterdam, Trix in Antwerp, The Villa in Oslo, Rex in Paris, and more. He was also part of the first ever Dubstep night in Ibiza, at Eden.

Fuelled by his constant creative output, The Others has received continued radio support from stations such as BBC Radio 1, XFM, Rinse FM and Kiss FM. He was an original member of the BBC 1xtra Daily Dose of Dubstep artists. All of these stations have invited Alex to play music on air, with Mistajam proclaiming his track Gravity and his First Flight EP ‘Jam Hot’.

His discography also hosts a very impressive catalogue of remixes including Above & Beyond, Breakage (with Newham Generals & David Rodigan), Caspa, Emalkay, Maroon 5 (with Wiz Khalifa), Reflekt, S.P.Y and Youngman & Skream.

2014 will see The Others continue to develop his musical creativity and delve into the deeper sound of Dubstep. He will remain focused on his DJ performances and spend another year travelling the globe, sharing his sound, and this will also be the year of Alex working alongside the label as an A&R to sign the next generation of artists. He is the next in line to mix Dub Police’s prestigious MyStyle compilation series. Add this to a host of exciting projects and planned collaborations, and 2014 will mean massive things to come for The Others.
